Native to Mexico, Calibanus hookeri has a caudex that can grow to 50 cm in diameter with thick, corky bark that has cracks in it. The leaves are tough and grass-like in appearance. It is a hardy plant and easy to grow in a container or the ground. It likes well-draining soil in a sunny position, and should receive regular watering when growing. It requires little water once established.
