This attractive plant was formerly known as Scilla violacea.  It grows in clustering purple bulbs up to 4cm in diameter.  It is prized for its attractive leaves which are silvery-grey in colour with dark markings on top, and purple underneath.  Its pretty bell-shaped flowers bloom in Spring and Summer and are purplish-pink in colour.  Plant so that the tops of the bulbs are above soil level.  Dry tolerant, it likes a part shade to full sun position in well-draining soil and should be allowed to dry out completely in between waterings.  It can be kept indoors in a brightly lit position.  Protect from frost.
