These fascinating little succulents are native to southern Africa.  They are very diverse in their leaf form and shape, and most carry patterns of raised white spots on their leaves.  The colour of many species changes with the seasons, from green in Winter to red or orange in Summer.   Their long-lasting, small, white flowers grow on stalks in Spring through to Autumn.  Care must be taken not to overwater them - a good rule of thumb would be to let them dry out completely, then give them a good drink, and let them dry out again.  In particular they should not be overwatered in Summer when they are dormant. 

Haworthias like to grow in the full sun or part shade, and should be protected from frosts.  They need a well-draining soil and are excellent in pots.  They can be kept indoors in a sunny position, such as a window sill.  With their small size, interesting patterns and architectural leaves, Haworthias are a lovely feature in a modern home!
